Forest Green 1940s Dressing Table
Project type
Forest Green 1940s Dressing Table
Date
July 2025
Location
St Albans
I collected this from a family clearing out the house of a loved-one who had recently died. The dressing table once belonged to their mum and held sentimental value for them, but was in bad repair and could not be accommodated in their own home.
I removed lots of the badly damaged veneer that could not be saved and then gave the whole thing a good rub-down with my orbital sander. This piece was a weird mix of ply, oak and some sort of chipboard so I decided the best thing to do was to give her a complete re-paint with a nice rich forest green and use a complementary peel-and-stick wallpaper I planned to line the drawers with to cover the damaged top surface too.
A few coats of paint, sealed with a spray lacquer and drawers and surface lined with paper (sealed on the top with more lacquer for a durable finish) and it was time to address the handles.
The original hardware was in place but dirty and discoloured after years of use. I gave them a good scrub and then used some antique gold Buff'n'Rub to bring out some of the pretty details. Not content with just this, I then free-hand accented the edges of the whole piece with more Buff'n'Rub for a touch of glam.
Isn't she lovely?
